But in reality, most people don’t really know CBD as “CBD”. “CBD” is a short word for cannabidiol which is often commonly referred to as marijuana or in slang – “weed”. This particular component comes from the hemp plant which people often smoke to get what people know as a “high”.

However, there are many countries that often stigmatize those who use “weed”. In some countries, CBD is still considered illegal and can merit punishment that can tantamount to death. But despite the stigma, CBD appears more misunderstood which is why it’s good for you to jot down these 3 important facts about CBD!

CBD can be a pain reliever

Other than being high and woozy, CBD does act upon the human body’s nervous system by interacting with the electrochemical receptors. These electrochemical compounds are also known as “neurotransmitters” and these are the ones responsible for all the sensations that happen in the body.

However, CBD does interact with a particular neurotransmitter pathway known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This particular system is often what controls the body’s need for sleep, appetite, pain, and the activity of the immune system.

What CBD does is, it blocks the receptors in the endocannabinoid system in order to reduce inflammation. When it does, the pain slowly subsides and the body can focus more on recuperating instead of flaring. Because of its ability to do so, CBD is used to treat the pain in Multiple Sclerosis and Arthritis which helps people to be able to walk better.

CBD can balance out the lack of Neurotransmitters

With mental health awareness now on the rise, it’s no surprise that CBD may be looked to as a possible alternative that can help with neurological or psychiatric disorders. And these disorders are often caused by the lack of a certain neurotransmitter in the body. This lack then creates an “imbalance” which causes problems such as depression, anxiety, and other neurological disorders.

CBD and its effect for Serotonin

Serotonin is a highly known neurotransmitter that’s responsible for a lot of a human’s moods, appetite, and sleep. And when there’s an imbalance, it can cause psychological problems. However, some psychiatrists have looked into the possibility that CBD can serve as an alternative.

When CBD enters the human body, it goes through the endocannabinoid system which also has 5-HT receptors. These 5-HT receptors are also commonly known as “Serotonin” receptors which are highly responsible for levels of happiness, sleep, and appetite. When Serotonin levels are low, people are more prone to feeling depressive, having high bouts of anxiety, loss of appetite, excess anger, and increased levels of panic. The CBD then serves as a substitute for serotonin as it activates the 5-HT receptors, making the body understand that serotonin has “activated”. This, therefore, creates an anti-depressant or anti-psychotic effect, mimicking the effect that serotonin would have had on the body.

CBD and its effect for Dopamine

Another neurotransmitter CBD affects is dopamine. Dopamine is known to be a precursor for epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) and norepinephrine. What CBD does is that it replaces the lack of Dopamine. The lack of Dopamine would then cause your body to spasm or move uncontrollably. However, this may appear differently in other people. But most commonly, the lack of Dopamine is featured as Parkinson’s Disease.

Parkinson’s disease can be quite hard to bear for people. One’s literally shuddering and vibrating out control as if you’re like your new iPhone taking in a ton of notifications. Sometimes, the muscles are so stiff that you’re barely able to move from the bed. It’s as if a python has paralyzed you or the sort. There’s also a loss of balance in which you can be walking one day and then teetering over to the other side.

How does CBD solve this? It solves it by again, engaging the endocannabinoid system by filling up the receptors that originally had dopamine. It also has antioxidant properties that prevent the neurons from degrading. And as the neurons are prevented from degrading, then, so are the neuron receptors. Because our mind is made with multiple neuron receptors, our minds will need them to do anything from micro-operations such as transporting nutrients and exchanging energy currencies to macro-operations such as getting your body to move.

It’s ability to help with dopamine levels also helps people who are afflicted with schizophrenia, epilepsy, and ADHD. Or any disease that is associated with an imbalance with dopamine levels. It also is capable of controlling and lessening the frequency and duration of seizures a patient has.

CBD does not get you high!

To many people, a common myth is that CBD is the one that gets you high. When in reality, it does not. CBD does not get you high. What makes one high when one smokes weed is the THC that’s included in the Marijuana (Weed). Weed is composed of two components which are the THC and the CBD. The THC is the one that gives a feeling of high whereas CBD is the one that provides the health benefit.

However, there’s another catch to this. The kind of CBD that comes of hemp plants vary. There’s a special variety of hemp plant that releases a calmer version of CBD that doesn’t give you the insane high compared to the many people consume. So before buying your CBD, make sure you get the CBD that comes from the calmer variety and not the one that “stones” your mind into oblivion.

So when it comes to CBD, always make sure you check the dosage. Sometimes, the dosage can also change the degree of effect or the kind of effect it has on people. Like all kinds of alternative healing, more doesn’t mean better. Sometimes, it can become over-kill and do worse damage than it can do help. However, it also works best if you have several opinions before doing CBD.
