When it comes to trends the Himalayan salt lamps have slowly climbed its way to the top of the list this year. Not only are they pretty to look at and would make a nice statement piece to any home, but proponents of the product have also boasted about its intended health benefits. Yes, there are supposed benefits to lighting up these lamps in your home.

People who sell the products have boasted about it improving the air quality around your home, soothe allergies and help you sleep better but is all of it true? Are there any evidences that prove the supposed health benefits of Himalayan salt lamps or are they all just a marketing tactic to get people to buy them?

Here’s what we find out.

What is a Himalayan salt lamp?

Himalayan salt lamps are basically just big chunks of pink Himalayan salt (mined from Pakistan) lit within by a lamp. They are well-loved right now because of the subtle glow and ambiance it brings to a home whenever it is lit but some also tend to enjoy the health benefits it’s supposed health benefits.

Aside from its aesthetic quality, Himalayan salt lamps have been known for it’s supposed benefits. It is thought to purify air in closed spaces through what you would call ‘natural ionization’. Salt lamps are believed to change the electrical charges in the air making it more suitable to breathe however, this is just in theory and not much study has been done that proves Himalayan salt lamps could actually improve air quality in closed spaces.

The science of negative air ionization

Scientifically, ions are particles that give of electrical charges because of their unbalanced proton or electron count. Research has found that negatively charged ions in the air could help improve seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and chronic depression.

Air ionization can be made naturally by changes in the atmosphere or artificially with a machine that adds an extra electron to air molecules to create negative ions.

With that said Himalayan salt lamps have been known to be ‘natural ionizer’ that emit negative ions that could improve air quality and provide health benefits. However, the little research done on Himalayan salt lamps and the ions they produce show that they produce so little ions that it could never even be measured!

What’s more, there really isn’t enough research done on Himalayan salt lamps and their effects on SAD or chronic depression so whether the claim is true or not still remains to be seen.

As for air purification, companies that sell Himalayan salt lamps claim that their product can actually clean the air through negative ionization. Himalayan salt lamps are believed to cling to dust or even kill off dust mites that might add to air pollution in your home. In reality, because Himalayan salt lamps emit such low levels of negative ions it might not even be strong enough to purify and clean the air in your home. Add to that the fact that there is still no research done to back up these claims make us doubt that it could actually do this job.

The alternatives

If you’re like us and are still not fully convinced that Himalayan salt lamps have any benefits except for being a nice decorative addition to your home, here are some alternatives you can try to improve air quality in your home.

  • Try negative ion generators. These could actually do the job since they emit high levels of negative ions that could improve SAD or chronic depression. Just be wary of certain commercial brands since they may do harm to the environment by emitting ozone byproducts
  • Add more plants to your home. Do things the natural way by adding plants to your home, not only do plants help with oxygen production, but they also absorb toxins around the space which can be harmful when inhaled.
  • Try activated carbon. To get rid of odor around your house try placing activated carbon to improve air quality.

Summary

It is still not known whether or not the claims about Himalayan salt lamps are true. And while they are great as a decorative piece in your home, we recommend you try other alternatives if your goal is to improve air quality around your home.
